My aim is to use internet through cable internet and share files? Please advice if i can do the networking myself..I am no novice and i am made to believe its not a tough job really..
It should not be a big deal.
I am going to assume because this is a small office, you will use wired connections. Wireless is also possible, but brings with it some complications. In general go wired if possible.
First get your cable connection established.
The cable company will come in, set up the modem, set up the cable, and connect one machine. Typically that’s where they stop.
That’s fine. Just make sure you can get on the Internet with the one computer before they leave.
Now set the network
You purchase a router at any computer store. Any major brand will do you well. D-link, Linksys, Belkin, Netgear are all well known brand names
Get Ethernet patch cords (not crossover) for each computer
Break out the manual for the router
Connect the router as shown
*****
IMPORTANT – Use the computer that connects to the Internet for setup. Most cable firms use the MAC ID of the computer they set up the system with as a security check. Using another computer for setup will cause no end of frustration
*****
You can use the setup CD that came with the router to set up the system. 90% of the time, that’s all it takes to get up and running.
If you are the unlucky 10% – here’s the main trick
Ditch the CD
Access the router using your browser (in the manual)
Clone the MAC ID (in the manual)
save your settings and restart the router
That usually gets you going
If not come on back, we’ll try to help
Once connected, you should be able to just plug your other XP machines into the router and be able to reach the Internet with any of them
To share files
Enable file and print sharing (start>settings>network connections>right mouse>properties)
Make sure all computers are in the same work group (start>settings>control panel>system>computer name tab)
Make sure that the folders you want to share are selected as shared folders
Good Luck
