2 computer towers, 1 no keyboard, monitor, mouse. How can I connect the two computers so I can use files on both
I have 2 computer towers, 1 does not have a mouse, keyboard or
monitor. Now, the old computer will not boot up without having the
keyboard, mouse and monitor connected. What I would like to do
is to connect my new computer to the old computer so I can use
the files on both computers using only my new computers keyboard,
mouse, and monitor.
What would be the easiest way to do this? Can I use a KVM switch
to "boot" both computers and then use a usb or someother simple cable
to directly connect the two computer and have access to both computers?
Thanks
You are exactly right. A KVM switch will let you use only one monitor, keyboard, and mouse. In order to share the files, you will need network cards in both pc's. Here, you can either get a crossover cable to connect the two, or a router, so that both can get to the Internet. The router will let both connect for things such as updating your antivirus programs on both pc's.

Well… You can pull your old hard drive, make it a 'slave' by changing the jumpers on the back and then put it in the new computer and use both hard drives in 1 computer.

Gray matter.

this is wut i would do….i would go to any electronic store…..Best buy's my fav…..and buy a simple 15 dollar hub. Your are going to need two regular ethernet cables. well leave your new computer off for the time being. and wut you do is, on your old computer, go to control panel and start a new network and start it as a home network. follow the steps and say that you are going to use a simple hub. after that is finished it's going to ask you if you want to save it on a disk. i would recommend you save in a safe place and email it to yourself. well you can now disconnect your mouse and keyboard ….etc… but leave the power suppy and hub connected. open the file tha tyou sent yourself on your new computer and TaDa you have both your computers connected. the only prob i see for you is that.if you turn off your old one like you said, you're going to need to connect the mouse.. other than that i would say that's the easy way to go…….Good luck….and if you need any more help give me a holler. God Bless…..Rafael.

A KVM switch will probably let you boot even if you aren't currently switched to that machine.
Another option without buying a whole KVM switch is to get one of those USB to PS2 adapters that let you hook up a PS/2 mouse and keyboard to a USB port.
It will tell the BIOS that a USB mouse and keyboard are there even when they are not.
Then you can use the networking strategies listed above for connecting the PCs and use Terminal Server to access your other PC's desktop (mstsc.exe) from the new box, assuming both are using XP Pro or Vista.
Then you can hide the old box in the garage next to the cat litter, and connect to it with a wifi card.

its probably best to use network cards on both to link them together.
