What is the difference between a Mac and a PC desktop computer?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: pc desktop computers

I have used pc’s all my life, so I don’t know how a Mac would perform. I do need a new desktop, so i’m not sure which to look into… I have heard that a Mac is faster… Is this true? Any info/suggestions would be great and you will earn yourself some MAJOR POINTS! Thanks

You should get a PC.

Reasons not to get a Mac.

1) Mac uses a subset of PC hardware but you pay significantly more for it.

2) Mac OS X less secure than either Windows Vista or Linux. Mac OS X was hacked in 30 min., 2. min, in 2006, 2008, 10 seconds in 2009.

3) Although Mac currently does not have as many Spyware/Viruses they are on the rise.

4) Linux has more cool effects than Mac OS X and can do every effect Mac can do..

5) For graphics/video production PC is equally as good. Each company has it’s preferences but Dreamworks Animation uses PCs

6) All computer manufacturers have problems but there are plenty of problems with Mac.

7) Follow the logic:
Facts…
A) XP and Linux are faster than Vista, Mac
B) OS X runs faster with more memory,
C) Vista runs faster than OS X on Mac with 2+gb http://www.gadgetell.com/tech/comment/vista-runs-faster-on-mac-pro-than-apples-os-x/

logical deduction from facts above
– A PC with Vista 2+gb runs faster than Mac OS X with lower specs but even with higher specs since a Mac uses the same components as a PC.., remember Linux and XP run faster than Vista..

ANOTHER OPTION: Dual boot with LINUX – You don’t need to choose Windows or Linux… have both at no extra cost..

    well, macs=$2000
    core 2 duo 2.4-2/6 ghz
    2-4gb ram
    500gb hard drive
    a onboard or mainstream graphic card(like 9600gt)
osx, u need to spend 200 dollars buying a copy of windows to play games
    slightly better for video editing
    less plugging
    better looking skin
    pc(include a 22 inch monitor(exactly what i have right now)=1500
    amd quad core 2.4 ghz
    8gb ram
    1tb hard drive
    GTX 26 core 216
    750 watt power supply
    comes with windows
nearly as good at video editing but does better with correct software
    more plugging

i have a imac g3 and no problems with it at all.Its a 8-year-old computer!!The only thing is that if you have been using a pc your whole time computing, you might wanna take a day off to figure it out.It took me at least two days to figure out my mac but im glad I took that time because its worth it.Plus they run cheaper than pc’s.I paid $20 for my imac g3 and it had 256mb RAM and a 7gb hardrive.I upgraded the RAM to 512mb and it runs as fast as our donwstair pc which has a 60gb hardrive and 1gb of RAM.It takes less RAM to view things than a pc.Basically a pc needs 256RAM for basic viewing and a mac only needs 128mb.Go for a Mac.

Macs aren’t faster than Windows XP, unless it’s bogged down with malware.

But they may be faster than Windows Vista.

If speed is all you care about, you should go for Linux. Speed is not an advantage of Mac OS X. OS X generally runs pretty slowly, which is why people jack up their RAM to 2 GB or 4 GB.

Macs have very slick exterior design and the operating system looks beautiful. Because of that beauty, a lot of people overlook or forgive some of the usability (or lack thereof) quirks.

Just try out a Mac for yourself and see if you like it. It wouldn’t be smart to just get one or not get one based on what people say here.

    short answer:
Macs are usually pretty fast because they come with top of the line hardware. At the same time however, you could definitely get a much faster and more powerful PC for the same price. With macs, you pay for the design, while with pcs the prices are much better and more accurate with what they contain

    long answer:
speed is relative, a mac is not faster than a pc or vise versa, it depends on the model and specifications. When it comes to computers there are almost infinite amounts of variables that effect a computers design and performance, but the main things are as follows:

processor: usually intel, the number of processors (quad, duo, single), the l2 cache and the speed (usually between 1.2ghz(bad) and 2.8-3.5 (GOOD)) determine how good a processor is. (this is really important)

ram: often overlooked, this is the temporary memory available for the processor to use. It is crucial to speed, and easily upgradable. 512mb-1gb of ram is pretty slow 2gb is decent 4gb is good and 8gb is plenty.

Hard drive: pretty simple here, the bigger it is, the more you can fit on it. 80gb is cutting it close, 200 is decent, and enough for most people, 500gb is plenty.

graphics card: this is completely irrelevent unless you play games. If you dont play games, and you dont do anything like 3d modeling, then dont worry about this, otherwise, the better the graphics card is, the better you games will look, and the smoother they will play

BOOm look at that, i over answered your question

Jessica, I’m not sure where you’re getting your statistics but you don’t sound like you’ve touched a Macintosh in a few years. Leopard is exponentially faster than XP, I have both.

Macs are more expensive, but you’ll know where that money went when your system, well, when your system fails to fail. Apple designed the hardware AND the software so they merge perfectly into one beautiful computer, performing beyond your expectations for a PC.

It really comes down to budget when you choose which one to purchase, and you can’t go wrong with either one but you will not be let down when you open that box and pull out an Apple Computer.

MACs have less trouble with viruses and worms etc. because of the OS. If you spend the same amount on a pc, it will be faster.

The real big difference is parts for a pc are cheap and easy to upgrade yourself. For example: I just installed a BlueRay/DVD combo in my pc. It took me 5 or 10 minutes plus loading in the software. I can now watch BlurRays in my bedroom:)

Another example for easy upgrades to the pc is buying an updated monitor. To watch 1080p movies, you need at least 1920 X 1080 dpi resolution. Also the new Windows 7 OS has touchscreen support, so you’d need a new touchscreen monitor.

You can also upgrade the whole case for a pc to fit your needs whether you need more room and cooling for multiple graphics cards, more connections on the front for USB, firewire and external SATA drives to even just what side you want the buttons or how insulated you need the case for quietness.

It depends on which one you’re talking about. The imac is just a one piece desktop http://www.apple.com/imac while most pc desktops come with the console and monitor.

Macs are way more expensive for the power. A $2300 mac would have the same amount of power as a $700 PC. Macs only advantage is Mac os which is a little faster than windows and they make all in one computers, but it has so many compatibility issues its not worth it in the long run. Also macs have a huge amount of restrictions when it comes to upgrading, therefor you cannot make a custom mac.
