How do you connect two computers to one printer?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: printer computers

I have two Dell desk top computers and one HP printer that has a Etherenet port but cannot print.

Assuming your computers share the same internet connection, they converge on a router.
Hook up your printer to this router, and configure the network settings on the printer.

On your computers, go the control panel and then printers.
Choose add printer, select network printer, choose browse to discover your printer in the network.

If you encounter problems, update your question with your printer make and model and you will receive a more specific answer to your problem

First make the two systems as network.connect the printer in any one of the system and install it. While installing the printer it will ask you the fallowing two options

    1. local printer 2. network printer from that select the ‘network printer’.so that the printer is connected for two systems.

If the printer has no network ports, both USB and Parallel port adapters as well as HP JetPrint modules are available for most printers to add a 10bT 10/100 CAT5 port for your device.

Alternative is to use Parallel or USB "A B Switch" if no networking is available.

Also advantage for a Network is that the primary server can act as a sprint server in Windows and you can "share" prints from the printer control panel (right click then Properties). Server will spoll output from second or more PC’s on same Domain or MSHOME/WORKGROUP.

You can certainly do it Witt’s way by having the printer connected to one computer and then share that printer with other computers. Those other computers would have to connect to that computer and go through it to the printer. That means the first computer has to always be on and it has to be opened up and its resources will be used up when printer.

Your printer has an ethernet port, meaning that it’s network ready so PCeeze’s answer is the better option.
If your computers are connected to a local network via a router, then you can just hook up your printer directly to the router and then any computer that’s connected to that router will have access to the printer.

HP has step by step instructions, but it’s really easy to do:

If you’re not on a router, here’s how to do the printer sharing:

Choose your method for sharing the printer. You have the choice of establishing a network or setting up a print server. Setting up a print server requires more hardware in addition to setting up a network, while solely setting up a network cuts down on clutter in your office.

Connect the primary, or first, computer to the printer. This is done traditionally with a printer cable linking the primary computer to the printer. If this is the first time the computer is hooked up to the printer, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and setup.

Change the settings on the primary computer to allow sharing of the printer. Go through the control panel menu option, and select printers. Right-click on the printer selection and choose "Share printer." You are now able to share the printer with any other computers on your network.

Connect the secondary computer to the printer. Access the shared printer option from the secondary computer. Select "network neighborhood" and locate the primary computer. Double-click on the primary computer, and the shared resources will become available. Double-click on the printer. You can now utilize the printer from both computers.
